Shanghai street, Knives and kitchenstuff market

I had read up on this prior to leaving because I really wanted one of those chineese style cleavers, a pro kitchen one – not for the home market.

Also, there is tons of shop related to baking. Not that interesting for me, but, If I could make the cake pictured below… that would be awsome.

Shit cake

Shanghai street is one of the longest streets for shopping in HK, but the main market – or not really market, this is a street filled with proper shops – starts pretty much when you get off at the Yau Ma Tei metro stop.

Today, even the monitors at the metro said “very hot!”, I think we clocked in at 35 centigrds in the shade, mixed with some heavy humidity this makes for weather close to my comfort level..

I love cake, and the chopping board shop is the first one you hit, and they are also mentioned on lots of travel sites. This chopping board shop is one of the oldest shops here, and they have people comming from all over to get these thick cuts of wood for chopping meat n stuff.

It would have been a nightmare to bring home, super heavy.

They have aboslutly everything here related to kitchen. Everything. Knives, chefs uniforms, icecream makes, fryers, chopping blocks, cutlery. Everything!, you could go browse here for hours if you are into this stuff, and I am.

Everything kitchen related you can think of.

And then there is knive, oh my.. real fun. 🙂 I had to get the cleaver in carbon steel. The stainless do need sharpening a bit less and is harder but its not the same..go for carbon steel.

The shop to go to is Han Chi Kee, which is kinda famous. If you follow the cookingshows and travelshows on tv – this shop is mentioned several times. There are also a lot of famous chefs, and chefs in general that get their knives from here. Supercool place, in addition to knives they had tons of other stuff to. I will put out some pictures.. A big cleaver in carbon steel will set you back 450-500 hkd, they come in 3 sizes and either carbon or stainless. Stainless beeing a. It more expensive, 50-60 or so.

The picture above is a pig-skin-eeeh-pricker ?.. For sticking holes in pigskin before roasting, they had 4 different types of these.
