Downtown Las Vegas, Freemont street.

I’ve been to Vegas probably 10 times before, and I allways end up walking up and down the strip. Nothing wrong with that, there is lots to see, tons of excelent resturants and lots of other weird stuff.

So I have never gotten around to do the downtown thing, but I have heard a lot about it. So finaly! We did a taxi to the Golden Nugget, thats pretty much the start of Freemont street experience thingy, from the Cosmopolitan it will be like 25$, it is a bit of the strip and will probably take you a long time walking.

For the most this street is a walking only street, mostly under roof. You can probably just make out the ziplines in the roof, where you can zoom across the whole roofed area reaching speed up to 35 mph, looking down at people. I will never do this.

At like,,7th or 6th street you are kinda out of the whole freemont experience street thingy and back on regular town pavements with cars in the streets. Here there are still lots of really nice places to visit, and the whole feel to the place is so much nicer thant the loud crowded area of both the strip and freemont experience street. (when I say freemont experience, that is the roofed sections of the street.)

We did breakfast at a place called “Park at Freemont”. Besides great breakfast sandwiches they also had whole grapefruits that they squished and pulped – then added a shot (or two) of vodka. When entering this place the server asked if we would like spiked coffee, that is coffee with alcohol, I told him from my high horse that “no! Good sir! It is just 09:30 in the morning, WAY to early for alcohol!”,, then 15 minutes later we had a grapefruit with vodka..

Besides the regular tatto and fridge magnet shops, you do get a bit more eclectic selection as you walk down towards 8-9 and 10th street. I think the absolute fav was this bookshop called “The Writers Block”, that I found googling. What an absolute gem this place turned out to be.

It kinda stands out in-between all the prostitutes, heavy drinking, ganja smoke and in general just hard partying. This place was an welcome change of setting and pace. Private owned, not member of any chain of bookstore, the place also had people working here that was into books and you could ask them anything and they would have tons of suggestions.

A bit funny, across the road was a independent music shop. selling vinyl mostly towards hardcore/punk. This place also independant and so kinda like in the same street (they where in the same street ofcousre..yeah..well). Anyways. So I asked the guy working there (Who was a big fan of Skam, the norwegian tv show) if he had ever been to the cool looking recordshop across the street..10 meters away. No, he had not – but music was not his thing, he had decided to dedicate his life to litterature… But he had heard great things ! 🙂

They had a excelent selection of books, but also tone of other stuff. Ill post some pictures, you get the idea. If you ever are in this area you should pay it a visit. And make sure to actually buy some stuff, so that it wont be gone next time you get here. We picked up a book by a local author that I now have forgotten the name of. And also a customized teddybear – there is a picture of it down here somewhere..keepe scrolling..

Proffessional Pilot and not one but two editions of POTATO GROWER. Great stuff – not to many carry these magazines anymore.

The JD Sallinger lost teddybear, came with the bears story about his time with Sallinger and what happended when he got lost. They had a few other to from famous authors.

The in-house bunny –  The Baron !

The shop is not to big, but what space they have they do utilize it. there where stuff everywhere, from false birds, drawing chalk and tin toys – bust most of all they had books.

And the lastest issue of Potato Grower !? 😀

And then accross the street, you had the recordshop. The guy working there had visited the book shop several times “Great guys over there” he said.

Excelent selcetion here to, I picked up a couple of local acts within the punk genre and had a talk with the owner about Motorhead. This was also one of those independant places that dont belong to a big heartless chain – so, stop by and buy a few records. They had most punk stuff, but also the general selection of classic rock and Burt Baccara.

I even found original Hokus Pokus with Focus.. 35$, I still regret it a bit not buying it.

Anyways, some more pics and text from freemont street to come. they had a great Container Shop area to that was kinda kool. But now we need to go hunt down some breakfast !
