Today we decided to go look at the Hanoi Hilton – or Hoa Lo as it is named locally. – meaning something like Hot furnace.
.. or Maison Centrale, what the fremch called it. It was built by the french early early 1900 something.
A rather small mueum of a somewhat iconic place – known from both litterature and movies.
John Mc Cain spent 6-7 years here – and thats how I know it, as a pow site during the Vietnam war. Of course it operated for many many years before this. But it was during the Vietnam war it got its nickname Hilton.
Pretty intimidating stuff – this guilotine (as I choose to spell it) has been in use and chopped of quite a few heads.. after the heads was put on diplay.
There is a few movies on, and quite a lot of different exhibitions – a few om them related to the one famous breakout trough the sewers.
Guessing thats where we get the norwegian word ‘kasjotten’ ?
A very sobering experience, well woth the walk and the 30.000 dongs pr person entrance fee.
